Forgot about your 2WD/4WD question. The 4WD is absolutely essential for these machines to come anywhere close to performing up to the bigger tractors. Once again, it's the traction problem. The difference between 2 and 4WD is like night and day with my tractor. The only time I'm out of 4WD is on hard pavement.

I've had a 4WD JD 650 with loader, JD 550 (?) rototiller, 5 ft boxblade, and a posthole digger for about a year. I have one rolling acre with clay and a few rocks. The tractor has done everything I have asked of it, but I would consider it too small for the situation you describe. The problem is that with this small and low powered (14.5 pto) a tractor, you have to do everything (except finish mowing) just a bit slower than you would with some more weight and power. I'd keep all my implements, but I'd want about 25 hp if I had your situation. I personally find a gear tractor to be fine for my uses, but if you're going to spend a lot of time with the loader, or going around trees, etc, mowing, a hydro would be very nice. The 650 also does not have a two stage clutch, so every time you declutch you lose your mowing or tilling capability.

They are good enough that John Deere sold them under the Deere label for many years, and they are still one of the most sought-after used tractors on the market. You very seldom see any negative comments on them on this forum, as opposed to some of the more recent Deeres. Also, according to more knowledgeable people on this forum than me, the Deere label Yanmar's were not even the top of the line models in the overall Yanmar lineup.

I believe you can buy the ROPS at cost from your local JD dealer, as part of JD's<br>tractor safety concerns.

Jeff,<br>The price depends on what area of the country you are in. I paid almost $10K for a JD 650 with a loader and 300 hrs, but I am (1) in California, and (2) in Silicon Valley. To me the price for your 850 sounds fine. In some other areas, it might sound a bit high. Most of the dealers/sellers are somewhat flexible on price, so you may be able to get it for a better price. As far as a loader, if my 650 can take a loader, I'm sure an 850 can. I'll bet JD still makes a loader for this tractor (call your dealer), but there are also many after-market loaders also available, and probably less expensive. Mine is a Bushhog, but I've seen several other makes referenced in this forum.

I've been very happy with it, even though it's a smaller tractor than you are looking at. My dealer is able to supply me with any spare parts I need even though it was made for them by Yanmar, as noted- I think this is one of the major advantages of the green tractors. My usage is mainly mowing and light landscaping. I've added a post hole digger from Northern Supply- definately a positive addition for post holes, planting larger plants, or digging in soil additives.

I have recently purchased a JD 650 with a Bush Hog loader and 3-point mower. Last week I wanted to make mowing easier (read: don't hit any more trees with the bucket on the loader). Removing the loader was easy, but when I restarted the tractor, I could hear a high-pitched whine from the hydraulic pump. The loader hydraulics were attached with quick-disconnect fittings on three separate hoses that go into the hydraulic pump area under the seat, so there is no manifold. One of the hoses has a female fitting, and the other two are male. I hooked up one of the male to the female fitting, and the whine disappeared. I'm guessing that hooking up the hoses directly to the pump outlets in this fashion does not put a relief valve in the system, and the whine was the pump working against itself. Is this correct? Should I continue to hook the male and female hoses together when the loader is off? Thanks in advance for any advice.

think this set-up is similar to your b7300. It's worked great for me. I'm digging
in a clay soil without a lot of rocks, but pretty gummy when wet. I've found that
if I dig to the limit of my 3-pt (36"+) and shut off the pto, sometimes the
hitch has trouble pulling the auger out of the ground. Two things help- first,
pull the auger out several times on the way down and let the dirt fly off.
Second, keep the pto turning while lifting the auger back up- that way the dirt
column in the auger doesn't re-attach itself to the edge of the hole. On the
final clean-out, however, it seems more efficient to shut off the pto, lift the
auger out of the hole, then give it a quick spin to clean off the dirt- it'll
fly out a foot or so and not back in the hole. The digger I have is from
